Descanso Beach and Avalon’s coast

Descanso Beach is a private beach setting beyond the Catalina Casino in Avalon, California. It is one way to spend time beside the water, while nearby coves offer a different experience of rocky shore, kelp and marine life. Decide whether you want a beach visit, a look underwater from a boat, or time in the water, then check the conditions and arrangements for that choice.

At the private beach club, outside food and drinks are not permitted. Check current access arrangements and the availability of any loungers or cabanas before setting out. Reservations for loungers are particularly useful in summer. Restaurant and seating hours describe those services and should not be treated as a promise that every part of the beach operates on the same schedule throughout the year.

Catalina snorkeling and diving

Lover’s Cove is a State Marine Conservation Area near Avalon, known for rocky reefs and kelp habitat. Snorkeling and diving are among the ways people visit the area. Conditions can change, so check current water quality, sea conditions and access before choosing whether to enter. Select a location and activity appropriate for your experience and equipment, and do not treat a protected-area designation as a safety guarantee.

Casino Point is another protected marine area. Its water access includes stairs with a handrail; those stairs are not a ramp. Check the actual access and conditions on your intended day, particularly if anyone in your group needs assistance. To see beneath the surface while staying dry, compare the glass-bottom boat and semi-sub options for a dry viewing experience.

Equipment rentals at Descanso include snorkeling gear, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. The rental operation is weather dependent, so ask about availability and conditions rather than building your day around a guaranteed departure. A rental is separate from the glass-bottom boat trip and from entry arrangements at the private beach club.

Marine protected areas: different rules

Casino Point is a no-take area: marine resources must not be taken. At Lover’s Cove, taking, damaging or possessing living, geological and cultural marine resources is prohibited, with an exception for recreational hook-and-line fishing from Cabrillo Mole. Both areas expressly allow fish feeding for observation. That exception does not mean visitors may feed marine mammals.

Give animals space and watch without touching, following or feeding marine mammals. Fish and marine mammals occur in the protected habitats, but sightings depend on wildlife. Respecting the rules helps keep the experience focused on observing the coast rather than disturbing it. If you would rather explore farther offshore, see the boat trips guide and check each trip’s meeting place.

Water quality and beach access

On October 30, 2026, Los Angeles County lifted a water warning for Avalon Beach west of the pier. That announcement applies to that location and date; check current public health notices for your own visit and chosen beach. It is not a standing guarantee for every cove. Look at local signs and the water itself before entering, and adjust plans if conditions are unsuitable.

At South Beach, the city describes areas fenced off because of erosion and sinkholes. Follow barriers and local instructions. Planned restoration work does not by itself establish that the entire beach is closed, so check the current situation before you set out. Keep beach time flexible if your trip depends on a particular access point.

Zipline near Descanso

The zipline route crosses Descanso Canyon and ends at the beach club. It is a separate activity from a beach visit. Read the current participation requirements and booking terms before reserving; the island tours page provides a starting point for comparing activities. Leave room in your schedule for getting between the meeting place and your other plans.
